New
Christ Church Primary School
www.newchristchurchprimaryschool.org.uk
New Christ Church Primary School in Reading, Berkshire, was in need of a Website. They wanted an image which suited the school: bright, friendly, welcoming and cheerful, with a family atmosphere. The site should be attractive, usable and useful for staff, parents, and children. Usability by minority groups and those with disabilities was important, as was the facility to update news pages, and upload images of school activities and artwork by the children.
Within these criteria, Get Sticky Design were given a fairly free hand to develop the site. We used a rainbow theme taken from the school, and incorporated this into colours used for the home page, and each of the class pages. The site was made with accessibility in mind for less able users, and this will be an ongoing factor in expansion of the site. A Flash photo gallery is used on several pages, but this is accessible to those viewing the Website without Javascript enabled. Alternative content is also written into the pages for those who don't have, don't want, or can't use Flash.
Photos were taken of some of the most attractive features at this little school, (stained glass, murals, etc.), and used as 'identifiers' for specific pages. These especially reinforce a sense of association and belonging for the individual class pages of the students. Similarly, each class page has it's own photo gallery, where the children can return on a regular basis to view their activities. Photos taken by teachers and staff may be added to these pages on regular basis to create quite large albums with minimal addition to page size, and download time for the Web user.
A large number of documents are available for download from the Website, from the obligatory Prospectus and Ofsted Reports, to menus for school lunches, and documents written by the school student council on bullying. These are all available as PDF files. A Custom Google search engine also was created, with its search scope limited to a certain number of school, government, and organisational Websites. These two factors provide most of the information that a parent might want to find, either directly within the site or via the search engine.
There is a page for items available to purchase from the school, The Governors, Staff, 'Friends' of the school and Church all have pages dedicated to them.
In the pipeline: the Website will have more student-generated content, multiple RSS feeds and more...
