A School Website for Parents, Teachers, Governors and...Children!

Each school will have it's own particular priorities; we recognise that. Perhaps you want to attract more children to the school, or maybe you want to promote your glowing achievements in SATS results or the latest OFSTED report. You may wish to draw disparate groups together to create more of a community where communication is improved, or you perhaps you want to have a portal from where students can more easily (and safely) find the resources they require to enhance their studies, and complete homework tasks. Tell us your priorities, and we will provide your users with a resource of which you can all be proud.

Prospectus, Policies and other documents

Every school will have basic requirements for their Website: important documents which must be available to visitors in the most convenient, secure and accessible format possible. Whatever format these documents may be in, (.doc, .ppt, .pub, etc.) we can transform them quickly and easily into accessible PDF (Portable Document Format) files, so that they may easily be read and printed out by your Website visitors.

Accessibility

More and more Websites seek to make their Websites accessible to less able users. It is a fact that many Schools still don't recognise their responsibility according to U.K. law in this area - read more about this in 'What about websites used in education?' from the RNIB Website.

Many large companies which develop school Websites do not conform to some of the most basic requirements for accessibility. Sadly, some that also promise to create accessible Websites either do not do so, or fail to ensure that the Administration area only allows accessible content to be created or uploaded.

Every single school on (at least) the first page of this Google Search for 'primary school website' fails both WCAG 1.0 Priority guidelines for accessibility AND basic good coding techniques to ensure consistent display across different Web browsers and operating systems, (last checked 17.10.'09).

How do I make my school Website accessible for less able users?

You don't - we do. Get Sticky Design make all newly-developed Websites accessible as far as possible within the limitations imposed by the client (you!). If you want to include something in your Website which we know will affect your compliance to the current law, we will inform you, and try to dissuade you. We will also do our best to find another, valid way to include what you want.

We do strive for conformity to automatic validation for WCAG 1.0 to Priority Levels 1, 2 and 3 for all Websites, but this is only guaranteed for school and public service Websites.

Database-fed content or static Website?

Headteachers, Teachers, and all staff working in schools have their hands full. We know it - there are hundreds of School Websites covered in 'Internet Dust' - they haven't been looked at or updated in many an age. The reason is that staff are usually just too busy to keep uploading, and updating content.

Search Engines and Search Engine Optimisation

Children around the world

Our methodical and comprehensive approach to coding, Web page structure and layout alone will ensure that your Website is 'spidered' by Google, Yahoo and other important search engines within a short space of time.

Valid and consistent coding and structure to your Website and pages mean that your site will be recognised as a valid and well-planned resource. This will aid in its ranking levels.

A new site will still need a helping hand though: we will link to you to give you a head start, and we will also provide you with an .xml sitemap (what is an xml sitemap?) which is submitted directly to Google and maintained Free of Charge throughout the lifespan of your business arrangements with Get Sticky Design.

Many search engine optimisation techniques used by us are frequently sold on as post-development extras by other companies: we regard them as an inherent feature of your Website, and wouldn't dream of letting a new Website out on the streets without them!
